Once upon a time there used to be a lively community of around 400 souls living at Godley head. The men and women who served there during the second world war were charged with protecting the entrance of Lyttelton harbour from enemy ships.  There were lookout posts and long guns set in gun emplacements dotted about the headland and even a tunnel to allow access to a lookout post right on the coast. Luckily for New Zealand, they were never called upon to fire a shot in anger.  The area is open for people to wander around and is well worth a visit, not only to see the buildings but for the magnificent views the site offers. Generally the gun emplacements are in pretty good order, although all the ordnance has been removed. There is a restoration project under way, which will guarantee the area is preserved for us and future generations to remember those that served there.

The photo is of an old, rundown shed which is waiting for the kind hand of restoration to bring it back to its former glory.
