For a week I am looking after a friends place down on the main road in Monks Bay. From the deck you get this view over the bar with what’s left of Shag rock on the right.

Nothing like a contrast. I’m reading in yesterday mornings paper how people are sleeping rough in their cars around town because they can’t afford the astronomical rents being charged around Christchurch post earthquake …… I look out the window and there is this big flash boat being launched down in Redcliffs. Go figure!

Visited here almost exactly two years ago, on the 15 May 2010.
The original is in colour, but the overcast day and ancient Friary seem to led themselves much better to a black and white interpretation.

Run little horse, run

Locally known as peacocks gallop. The story goes that there was once a man called Peacock who lived in Sumner by the sea. Knowing that the sea cliffs he passed under on his way to the city on his horse were like to send rocks down upon his delicate head, he decided that a fast moving horse was less likely to be hit. He would therefore gallop his horse along this section of the road. The recent Christchurch earthquakes have sent a lot of rubble, and part of one house to the bottom. Seems Mr Peacock had the right idea.
