I checked out this old substation at the corner of Peterborough and Manchester Streets on google earth the other day to see how it used to look. Before the earthquake it had a double storied house on its left, and was crammed into a small space. Now that that house has been demolished, the building can breath again with empty sections on both sides.
Before the earth moved back in February 2011 this area was grassed, and the Pleasant Point Yacht club stood beside the water. Since then the land has sunk and is flooded with every high tide, causing all the plants and trees to sicken and die. This is a Cabbage tree that is just managing to survive. Maybe!
Taken from the traverse under Mt Bradley, the second highest peak on Banks Peninsula at 855m. The highest peak is Mt Herbert, just next door at 919m. If you follow the right hand ridge down to the saddle you should be able to see the Packhorse Hut. If you continue following that ridge down you can just make out the eastern tip of lake Ellesmere.
More info about the event and course can be found here.
It’s hoped that this will become an annual event.

Spent this afternoon wandering round the western side of the CBD playing the “what used to be on that site” game. Mostly the answer was, “no idea”. Took this shot (actually 3 shots, merged together in Photomatix, and then enhanced using Topaz adjust). As the photo shows, the old pump house has been lifted out of the ground, but has remained pretty well intact. If you want to read a bit more about it, have a look at this PDF on the City councils website.
Stormy day here in Christchurch, although nothing compared to the “weather bomb” that hit the North Island over the last 24 hours.
