Not a race for the faint hearted: yet every February around 700 competitors cycle, mountain run and kayak from Kumara Beach (near Hokitika) on the Westcoast of the South Island to Sumner beach, Christchurch: a total distance of 238 kilometres!

Competitors enter individually or in teams of two. For the two dayers there is an overnight stay at Klondike corner in Arthur’s Pass National Park, before continuing early next morning with a short cycle ride to Mt White Bridge. There they hop into awaiting kayaks for the 67 km of grade 2 – 2+ kayaking down the Waimakariri River. The race finishes with a 40 km cycle to Sumner beach. The record time (one day men’s) is 10 hours and 34 minutes.
