Beauty Spots along the way

Beauty Spots along the way

In January I did a road trip down to Wanaka, then across the Haast, down to Jackson (which has a great coffee shop) and back up the coast to Christchurch via Arthurs Pass.  It was an idyllic drive, hot with warm lakes to swim in and clear skies and calm seas (all less than ideal for photography, but lovely for touring).  I stayed in the campground in Okarito and beside lake Paringa. I rode my bike up the old southern access road to Fox glacier, now closed to cars, for views of the rapidly disappearing glacier, and through the then, ghost towns of Fox and Franz Joseph.  I used to visit those towns quite regularly when I was a tour guide, so was quite shocked to see the closed businesses and lack of cafe’s.  I believe business has picked up a lot since the borders opened and tourists are returning.

So here are a few photos that I took along the way that I have converted into black and white. The rational behind the black and white look is that most of them were taken in midday sun, so are pretty ordinary shots. I thought they looked a bit more interesting as black and white and look more arty!  Don’t worry you bird lovers, whilst they are mostly landscapes I have snuck a few bird shots in.

  1. Love all of these. Black & Whites are still my favorite images. It’s what Ansel Adams did best!
