Windy days on the Pisa Range

Hired some snow shoes from the snow farm, paid my $10 trail fee and plodded my way into the Bob and Daisy Lee huts on the Pisa Range with a group of friends last week, in pretty yucky conditions. It’s around 5.4 kms to get to the huts and takes roughly 1.5 hours on snow shoes, although it took us slightly longer as we had to divert to the Musters Hut to pick up our bags and carry them the remaining 1 km to the Bob Lee Hut. There are roads and trails to follow around the tops, so navigating your away around isn’t too difficult (unless you are like me, and are navigationally challenged that is!). The Snow Farms principle interest is preparing trails for Nordic Cross country skiing. They cut two parallel tracks around the roads for the skiers to follow. People also go Snow kiting, cross country touring and snow shoeing in winter, and walking and Mt Biking in Summer. You can rent out the huts, either by the bed, or for a whole group. We had both the Bob and Daisy Lee huts booked for our exclusive use.

There is also a Car Proving business situated around the area, with 16 testing tracks dotted around the base station.

To get to the Snow Farm you follow the Cardrona Valley Road. It’s roughly and hours drive from Wanaka.
